Musical Instruments


Ngayogyakarta Sultanate has 18 devices of gamelan that are categorized as Palace heirlooms, they are:

1. Gamelan Monggang known as Kyai Guntur Laut KanjengThis is a legacy herritage from Majapahit kingdom passed on to Demak Sultanate, Pajang, Mataram Islam, and finally belong to Ngayogyakarta Sultanate.
2. Gamelan Kodhok Ngorek known as Kyai Keboganggang Kanjeng
3. Gamelan Sekati which consists of Kyai Kanjeng Gunturmadu and Kanjeng Kyai Nagawilaga. Both of these were made ​​in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Gamelan Sekati is taken out of palace and placed in Pagongan on every Sekaten ceremony, in front of Masjid Agung (Grand Mosque), Kauman. Then it will be used as start date in 6-11 int the month Mulud or a week before the end of Sekaten ceremony.
Beside of those Gamelan, Ngayogyakarta Sultanate also has other gamelan devices, namely: Kanjeng Kyai Surak,
 Kanjeng Kyai Kancil Belik, Kanjeng Kyai Guntursari, and Kanjeng Kyai Bremana.

Note: Monggang and Kodhok Ngorek are the name of gendhing or Javanese song. Gendhing Monggang as an example is the escort gendhing of Sultan’s death that can only be played by Gamelan Kanjeng Kyai Guntur Laut.
