Great Wedding Ceremony in Ngayogyakarta Palace

There are many customs and traditions in Ngayogyakarta Sultanate Palace, but one will be described here as an example is the Wedding Ceremony. During the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, this Great Wedding Ceremony has been held when the eldest daughter of Sultan, GRAj Nurmalitasari (which later changed its name to GKR Pembayun), married with Nieko Mesa Yudha (later titled Wironegoro KPH) in May 2002. The wedding was held with the customs and traditions of Ngayogyakarta Sultanate which has been held for centuries. Here's a few explanation about the process of wedding ceremony in Ngayogyakarta Sultanate:

Nyantri

The main procession of wedding ceremony begins with a ritual, namely Nyantri, the procession with leaving the groom to the bride's family before the wedding day and stay at the relative’s home. The purpose of Nyantri is when the wedding began so the groom was ready in place and will not be troublesome for the bride’s family. Nyantri conducted at several locations within the palace. Both of the groom and the bride must be separated while waiting for the procession of traditional rituals. KPH Wironegoro, as the groom, was placed in Kagungan Dalem Gedhong Sri Katon, while the bride, GRAj Nurmalitasari, placed in Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Sekar Kedathonan.

Majang and Pasang Tarub

The next procession in the Royal wedding is Majang which means decorating the house whose holds the wedding ceremony, in this case is the Ngayogyakarta Sultanate family, and also decorating pasren (bridal chamber).  After the procession of Majang has been done, then the next procession is Pasang Tarub where Gusti Kanjeng Raden (GKR) Hemas (the queen of Sultan Hamengku Buwono X), gusti, and bendara put on decoration in the east side of Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Prabayeksa Kidul porch. While the selected Abdi Dalem (courtiers) put Tarub and Tetuwuhan (interest) in the environment for princess . Processions Majang, Put Tarub, and Tetuwuhan also performed in the complex Kesatriyan and Ward Kencana .
